Description [ ✖ ]
ADOPTION AGREEMENT
Alyosha is summoned to meet the Brucolac on the gravel beach south of the rising Srathmarbh Spire; there, they come to an agreement by which Alyosha will take on the care of the Brucolac's yet-unborn children, should they be freed from his debt to Lucky Penny's, a gambling house in Mair. [ ✖ ]

PLANS The war will be amping up, and participation in the first major battle will leave Alyosha wrong-footed at first, before her innate pragmatism grinds at her enough that she begins to reorganise and restructure her resources. She will take many mercenary jobs and travel the drabwurld with her troops over the course of Spring and Summer, often with many of her shardbearer friends and acquaintances in tow. Many of these missions will have significant political implications and undertones. This period of adventuring will also act as her last hurrah before she knuckles down to parenthood, and adopts two children roughly in Sept/Oct. She will turn over visible leadership of her company to her right hand, Diarmuid, and begin an aggressive series of behind-the-scenes political power plays which should be just rolling out by the May 2,702. Politically beneficial marriage may wind up being involved. The timeskip will represent a transition by which Alyosha will withdraw into a more background role, consolidating influence through various avatars and a deep network of contacts spanning both courts, and the resume to gametime will herald her opening play to begin effectively crippling the courts.
SUMMARY OF KNOWN DETAILS Alyosha will, over the course of timeskip:
✖ engage in a magical bond with Diarmuid
✖ increase her wealth by taking high-risk mercenary opportunities
✖ here and there tutor and keep the care of Rin's young heir
✖ adopt two beebins and yield control of her mercenaries in favor of getting more domestic
✖ may wind up tutoring other kids in the bargain?
✖ may wind up gaining power and influence via... marriage?
✖ will go to Samhain & a few other festivals
✖ can teach shardbearers how to activate/use their shard

Spring 2701
My honour has never been diminished for being shared.
Politics // March
"You all know my feelings on returning power into the hands of natives, Elders. But... what you propose is... drastic. There hasn't been a coup like this since the time of Princes."

Morven laughed lightly, shaking back his hair, his sudden smile sunnily beautific, "Always so complimentary of me, warrior," he teased.
Lainost shook his head, frowning, clearly hating to be interrupted. He continued, "... Better to live in war than not to live. We all perish, at the moment of Seelie victory. Your efforts, and those of the serpent, have yielded nothing. Those who have followed your track in the times before you have found nothing but their deaths upon it. The time is now to make a decision, and between us three and your sire, there is unanimous accord: to give our aid to all Unseelie, that we may prevent the world from sliding into utter darkness."
"No kind of predator sees his end coming and doesn't fight it," snapped Aileas, pausing to frown, dragging her sharpened nails over the back of an unoccupied chair, raising splinters in their wake.

Late Feb/Early March, Pre-Leathann | Shard Training Continues
Waver's fine with the break, but in returning to Alyosha's villa, he knows he's itching to return to work. He greets the servants in turn, hands over the recipe cards he asked Shirou to write down because really, it seems like Shirou's everyone's favourite cook now, and readies himself for another round of work. VH rolls beside him, carrying a notebook and ballpoint pen, full of Waver's own training logs. It's written in chemical equations - nonsense ones if anyone with a modern knowledge of chemistry ever took a glance - to ensure that no one else understands.]

Mmm. Much progress, Waver?
[ She's been brighter-eyed and more chipper than usual by far. But also more closeted away, meeting often with her daughter or other, unfamiliar faces. Busy near-constantly with paperwork. ]

Summer 2701
The world is ending. It's time to stop the slide into atrocity.
Midsummer
She was lain out in the grass, slender fingers braiding long green stems together. The moon was high overhead, and her mother lay out near her, their heads together, their bodies stretched in the opposite direction. Distantly rang the noise of camp and men and horses; plumed of thin smoke rose from cooking fires.

"He never lived there; keeps a home somewhere deep beneath the Cothromach. He says he carved much of it himself, and if what I know is right, all the stories he told you when he dandled you on his knee are true. A whole vast hall filled with glittering, gleaming spy-mirrors, chambers filled with so many books that you can't see them all, shrines to all his old gods..."
She paused, plucked a stem of grass. "Does he visit you very often?"
Autumn 2701
Children might or might not be a blessing, but to create them and then fail them was surely damnation.
Sept
She slipped into the Copper Kernel and paid in coppers for a drink she'd invariably leave untouched, and shouldered her way over to a familiar table. Imagined to herself and that's where Akos sat, and Cassel there, and... it was that table just across the room that I'd stumbled to with my wolf.
It was the anniversary of the night of her death, her contraction of vampirism.
She tucked the drink close to herself, looked at her reflection in the darkness.

He curved a dark-skinned hand over an empty seat beside her. Pulled it out without a sound, without a single scrape on the floorboards.
"Aly," he murmured, very gently. "I had to hunt you down. Did you mean to spend tonight alone? I can... go, of course..." Despite effort, his concern was evident.

Winter 2701
I'm so tired of feeling cold.
FEBRUARY 2,702
I am unsure of what you've heard of the murders in Parrais, but the situation has the potential to lead to disastrous consequences, not only for shardbearers, but for attempts at peace between the elves and the vampir.
I believe that we are close to finding the culprits. Should you be able to meet with me, I would greatly appreciate any assistance.
- Cullen, Guard-Captain of Caer Glaem
[ If nothing else, perhaps this response would help. ]

I'm surprised to find that these investigations have been your purview. That said, I am obliged to assist.
Have you made inquiries by proxy into the Midnight Court? Sent messengers to the elven-kingdom or vampir leadership? It was my suspicion on hearing about the attacks that they were propagated by elves, removing visible supporters of the human steward. Their politics are fractious: these were many elven clans united but within the last year under a charismatic leader who has since perished, and his second sleeps now in fairy-sleep. I would not be surprised if others attempt even now to usurp power.
I will ride out to Caer Glaem for arrival on the date you specify in following correspondence.

christmas, 2701
The box has a handful of presents, the first of which given as a general gift of friendship; a charmed cloak, to keep her safe, and a pouch with a second charm to offer her room for all the things she might carry. There's a note that tells her that, inside the bag, there is a series of potions to keep her safe and offer her healing if she needs it, including a small vial of the golden luck potion.
The gift unique to Aly, something that Hermione had considered for far too long, is a small handful of items. The first is a necklace with a small indentation, the rune in the middle one she had learned from Dorian; it will help deflect an attack from her, but only up to a certain weight. The second is a bone charm, learned from the Outsider, inscribed to help give her more luck, in the hopes that it would bring her joy. The last gift is a note, a small charm slipped around the ribbon that ties it together, a tiny fabric pouch holding it all together;
We met on bad terms and I have done all I can to make up for that. I look forward to getting to know you better, Alyosha, as you're a good friend to so many that I care about. Whenever you need me all you have to do is throw a little of that powder into a fireplace and call my name. I'll do whatever I can to help you, any time I can.

Yule 2701
My beloved partner,
In my homeland, when a warrior proves themselves in battle, they are gifted a torc as a sign of their skill and bravery. These torcs, once put on, are worn in honor until said warrior passes from the world. Long ago, you proved your skill and bravery. In fact, you still continue to do so. Please wear this in honor of all of you have done and will continue to do.
Hopefully, the toys will keep the little ones out of trouble.
Be well until we meet again,
Diarmuid Ua Duibhne

YULE 2701
I think of you and the children all the damn time. Will you tell this story to them?
B.
[Attached to the note is a sprig of mistletoe and a fairytale from Bas-Lag written out in the Brucolac's own hand; he has clearly made attempts to neaten his usual scrawl. It tells about a khepri who falls in love with a human man and makes a deal with a demon for the ability to speak to him. She owes the demon her heart in seven years to come. When the time comes, she says that the demon has every right to her heart, but may not spill a drop of her blood, as this was never stated in the contract. The demon has to relent, and the khepri and her human lover are left in peace.
For Alyosha, there is also a high-necked cloak enchanted by the same sorceror who produced the Brucolac's first Samhain costume. It's useless at keeping the cold out, but it slides over her like mirror-bright liquid and glimmers like a moving oil-slick when the wind tosses it. For Shamash, a stuffed bear with golden fur; for Ishtar, the same, but silvery black. Both are enchanted to be fireproof, and roughly the size of the children themselves.]

Spring 2702
I am who I choose to be. I always have been what I chose… though not always what I pleased.
Now, I'm going to be what I please. Fuck those who want to read that for weakness.
APRIL APPLE BLOSSOMS
Head and shoulders propped up on the trunk of a tree, she'd nestled her daughter in the crook of her living arm, the child's head pillowed on her shoulder. Shamash, smaller for their similar age and less inclined to squirm and fuss, was propped on her chest, gumming at his own hands.
Alyosha's silver hand held a slim volume, and even in the low light she read it easily over her children; like any other mother might read a story-book.
"'Though it should not be the sole prop of your power, your reputation is your currency, and you’re naive if you don’t put some work into polishing it. Nonetheless, the occasional scandal can be helpful; perhaps you need to make yourself seem a little more down-to-earth, or a little more exciting, or you need to invent a weakness to distract from the real gaps in your defences.'" She chuckled there, half-absently, and turned her face towards Ishtar's sudden gurgling for attention.
"Isha, Isha, do you know how much scandal you would cause?" She flicked the fork of her tongue fondly against the infant's ear, and she squealed merrily. "Do you? I know very well you don't, little darling. Yes, yes, sharpen your little fangs on my clothes, that'll do just wonderfully. Now," She cleared her throat to continue.
"'This latter is effective but deadly difficult, and should not be attempted by novices. It is easy to invent weaknesses, and hard to dispel them.' Your father's too clever by half, and I hope he listens to his own advice. If we're discovered, he and I, it'll be a race back to Dorchadas for us three. Now there's a section he should've written, 'When to Cut Your Losses'. I've made better progress than I thought I might, in the Citadel... Marquis Kayneth, Hermione, Flora are mine for certain, but I'll need the others too. The Lady Keeper, a better grip on the Marshall."
She quieted there, set the small book down over one thigh, hugged them both loosely close to her. Used her fingertips to gently pluck fallen pale petals and flowers away from their backs and sides. "And to smother his son..."
She hummed thoughtfully, frowning, and kissed Shamash's dark, fine hair.
April; action, at the villa
After all, he's vowed to look after the keeper of this place. It would only make sense to familiarize himself with it. He lets his magical energy flow throughout, lets it announce his arrival on his behalf. I am friendly, it seems to say. Come and greet me.
Alyosha, The Red Lady, woman of a thousand titles and the battered face... but he already adores it so. She's of endless charisma in her own, of that much it is certain.]

MAY 2702
You will have heard the stories by now. P isn't yet dead. I hold to that.
I've tortured myself with thoughts of either of us being called up for our crimes—lies, I tortured myself thinking of you called to justice. My own punishment I could care less for. I think of it almost indulgently, strangely, except when I consider the effects it might have on mine, my home, my family.
But this isn't what I intended to write to you about—I wanted to say—that we each are likely to be dragged before gods, before light-and-dark things we would never have known existed. That, though wrested from our worlds, we've bled into this one, made it grow to us, and grown into it. And as cruel as this life is—how lucky we are. To have touched the hems of hell and heaven.
I love you dearly.
no subject
Didn't need to speak with her more than minutes to know why you sent her. Knew too that you'd take care of her, whatever happened.
I love you. Hard enough that I know you've read it in my eyes before; and I'd be surprised if even from this distance you couldn't feel the pressure of it in your bones, like an old familiar ache.
Our children have lived almost half as many months as the number of times I've met and laughed with you. Like light, you glance off all the hard edges, illuminate the corners. Some moments your beauty passes through me like an electrical current. My world would be darker without you.
When you're with me, I'm at home, wherever I am— no, no— that's wrong—
Even when you're not with me.
We'll face the wrath of gods, of monarchs likely, face the Void, heaven and hell know what else. There's no such thing as safety, wolf, not for us, when we pour ourselves into all around us. Only varying states of risk. And failure.
And we have much worth risking for. Enough that I'd face the full pantheon of gods, chin high, hand trembling, guts twisting with resolve and fear. And if all comes to naught, and the Void take us and make us nothing, our spirits and bodies sacrificed to make new worlds and new lives, perhaps some infinitesimal elements which were once me, and you, might blindly collide. Might burn as the brightness of new stars, or be the foreign dirt in which something beautiful and wild grows, or form the hard edge of some future stranger's cocky smile.
